WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
BALLET MOVES
Years Kindergarten – 2
This workshop introduces students to the elements of dance (such as spatial and dynamic elements) by engaging the young minds’ imagination, musicality and curiosity while exploring creative movement. To align with Queensland’s premier children’s festival Out of the Box, Little Red Riding Hood will be the focus work.
LEST WE FORGET REPERTOIRE WORKSHOP
Years 3 – 6
This workshop explores the theme of war through repertoire selected and adapted from QB’s triple bill which draws from ballet and contemporary genres. Students will also be guided through choreographic activities that will assist them in creating their own, unique movements, providing opportunities for them to develop creativity and problem solving capacities.
BALLET HISTORY WORKSHOP
Years 3 – 12
Students learn three pieces of repertoire from the romantic, classical and modern ballet eras, focusing on the social and historical contexts which influenced the evolution of ballet as well as the characteristics of each ballet style. Students are also invited to examine production elements of a performance such as tutus and a pair of pointe shoes.
BALLET TECHNIQUE CLASS
Years 7 - 12
This class focuses on developing classical ballet technique through a series of barre and centre exercises. This is a great class for those wishing to develop and hone their classical ballet technique and to learn about the standardised conventions of a daily company class, which are consistent around the world.
STRICTLY GERSHWIN REPERTOIRE WORKSHOP
Years 7 - 12
This workshop explores jazz and tap techniques through a range of repertoire excerpts from Strictly Gershwin. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to compare and contrast the characteristics of the different genres including shape, dynamics and movement qualities as well as examine socio-cultural contexts which have influenced the evolution of these genres such as the American Civil War.
TESTIMONIALS
We absolutely loved the workshop! The students were inspired, challenged and motivated. The EdSquad teaching artist had such a sweet teaching style and we loved seeing the tutu.
Emily Briddock
Dance Teacher, Genesis Christian College
The EdSquad teaching artist was a wonderful QB ambassador. She had a great way with the students and was able to manage their behaviour as well as engage them in the workshop.
Leah Hamilton
Special Education Program Teacher, Brisbane School of Distance Education
Students were thoroughly engaged in the workshop and even non-ballet dancers enjoyed performing repertoire. Students are always in awe of professional guest teachers, and this was no exception.
Kate Gardiner
Head of Department - The Arts, Coorparoo Secondary College
The Queensland Ballet workshops were a wonderful way for our junior and senior students to learn more about the history, technique and features of this important genre of dance. As well as being informative, EdSquad facilitators Mia and Jacob ensured that the students were welcomed, yet challenged, through very stimulating and enjoyable activities.
