About the Production —
With its gorgeous Gershwin tunes, dancing, singing and all-out razzmatazz, Strictly Gershwin is a glorious celebration of one of the finest composers of the 20th century, whose music defined the loves, hopes and mood of a generation.
Let the signature, sliding notes of the saxaphone draw you into Rhapsody in Blue, a gorgeous tutu number with flowing lines and crisp phrasing. Climb the Stairway to Paradise and feel the heat of Summertime, a sensual and simmering pas de deux. Find your Fascinatin’ Rhythm and try to stay in your seat for dazzling tap numbers and a feel-good musical medley of some of the Gershwin’s best-known songs.
With stunning choreography from Derek Deane, the dancers of Queensland Ballet and special guests will take you on a glamorous journey through ballet, tap and ballroom, culminating in a spectacular grand finale – the sparkling, energetic ballet from An American in Paris. The Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the musical direction of Gareth Valentine is on-stage, 1930s big band-style, as much a part of the entertainment as the dancers.
Superb guest singers and tap dancers will join the Company to present this perfectly-pitched homage to Gershwin’s Hollywood and Broadway classics, while images of the stars of the era – think Astaire and Rogers, Hepburn and Tracy, Bogie and Bacall – flicker on a big screen above.
Strictly Gershwin is an unforgettable and enchanting celebration of Gershwin’s timeless classics.
