Carmen & The Firebird

25 May — 3 June, Playhouse, QPAC

A fiery and dramatic double bill choreographed by two of ballet’s best.

Carlos Acosta, former Principal of The Royal Ballet and one of the most acclaimed dancers in the world, has distilled the famous operatic story, Carmen, into a powerful, theatrical ballet — a tour-de-force of raw, honest characters and thrilling dance.

Bizet’s electrifying music underscores a tale of passion and betrayal. Don José is hopelessly smitten by the free-spirited and sensual Carmen, but when she discards him for a dashing matador, his ardour turns to jealous rage.

Famed choreographer Liam Scarlett brings his hallmark musicality and finely-crafted choreography to the iconic 20th century ballet, The FirebirdWhile paying homage to the ground-breaking original, Scarlett asserts its modern relevance with an unconventional twist to the powerful narrative.

Prince Ivan calls upon the magical Firebird to help him do battle with Immortal Kostcheï, whose evil soul is protected within an enchanted egg. In this mythical, dark tale, a mighty battle of wills and a burning love ignite the drama.

Carmen is a co-production between Royal Ballet, Queensland Ballet and Texas Ballet Theater.
The Firebird is a production from the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet.
